October is the birthday of one of the saxophones greatest innovators. Not just in the musical sense but also in the technological sense. This saxophonist released the patent for what is known as the reed mouthpiece for the trumpet, cornet, trombone and flugelhorn. In addition to altering the mouthpieces of different wind instruments he was also a leader in the use of electronic pickups and effects for wood wind instruments. The Varitone by the Selmer Company was one device he was famous for using.
