Contest background

Music has had an extensive history collaborating with other forms of art. It could be a piece of music inspired by poetic writings or a series of music compositions that follow the colorful works of a painter. One such saxophonist has been active in combining music with other art forms for more than 30 years.

Born in the Boston area this saxophonist later relocated to New York to work with such big names as Kenny Wheller, Charlie Haden, Bob Brookmeyer and many others. A forward thinker and progressive composer, this saxophonist continues to be active in the pursuit of world music collaborations. Following the example of Eddie Harris, this saxophone player is also a major pioneer in the use of electronic foot pedals to alter the sound of the saxophone.

A passion for all art forms keeps this person active in writing pieces strongly influenced by love for dance, painting, film and theater. Over the year this musician/composer has stacked up an impressive amount of awards and writing commissions. In 1989 this saxophonist was the first musician to be commissioned by the NASA Arts Program.

"Sometimes I throw sound around the band like paint and other times I play and feel as if I was carving silence like a sculptor."
