Contest background

Saxophone maker's have been an experimental bunch from the days of Adolphe Sax to the present. Many ideas about keywork have come and gone and some come back again such as the low A, high F#, high G, trill G# key, trill high D and Eb, low Eb speaker key, low C speaker key, just to name a few.......

Contest Question

What was the first saxophone that was keyed up to high G, who made it, and what year was it manufactured?

Correct Answer

Although Adolphe Sax received a patent for improvements to the saxophone by adding keys to extend the range to G3 on January 16, 1881, he never actualy built the instrument. Therefore, the Conn-O-Sax was the first saxophone to be keyed up to high G. It was also keyed to low A and was pitch in the key of F. This rare instrument was made by the C.G. Conn Company from 1928 to 1930.
