Sigurd Manfred Rascher is considered by many to be the "grandfather" of classical saxophone. He has performed with over 250 orchestras in over 50 countries. By 1970 he had already performed the Ibert Concerto over 100 times in concert. At the age of 94, his death on Febuary 25th marked an end of a great epoch in saxophone history.

In Sigrurd Rascher's first orchestral performance, he played a saxophone concerto written specifically for him. Who wrote the piece and in what year and with what orchestra did this performance take place? Sigurd Rascher was the first solo saxophonist to perform with the New York Philharmonic and also with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. What year did he debut with these orchestras? Correct Answer

Edmond van Borck wrote the first saxophone concerto played by Sigrud Rascher. It was performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in August of 1932 for the Allgemeines Deutsches Musikfest in Hannover, Germany. In the late 1930's Rascher moved to the United States, were he made his American dåbut in 1939 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Rascher appeared the same year as soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. After emigrating to the United States in 1938, Rascher taught at various schools. The first was the Manhattan School of Music in 1940.
