Contest background

This great saxophonist made his first recordings with a band where he was known as one of the joy boys. He later joined the Ellington reed section where he also played piano with the band on occasion, which eventually led to him being fired. He was one of the most influential musicians in shaping a concept of the "saxophone sound". He continued to play up until his death in the 1970's.
