Contest background

1840 marked the invention of the saxophone by Antoinne (Adolphe) Sax, a Belgian, in Paris. Musical instrument development and production during the Industrial Revolution was very popular and until his death in 1894 he spent much time in court (usually successfully) defending his patents. The Adolphe Sax saxophone was first introduced in the United States in 1853. However, many years would pass before saxophones would be manufactured in the United States.
