Lush Tone at a Great Price
This is an SML Gold Medal Mk. I alto sax in an unlacquered finish with a serial number of #19140. SML is a French manufacturer which had a few models running contingently through the 60s, the Rev. D, King Marigaux, and the Gold Medal Mk. I and II series. All these models are renowned for their dark, lush texture and powerful low end.

Featuring key-work from low Bb to palm F with a front F mechanism with real mother-of-pearl key touches, this saxophone has all the standard amenities of a vintage sax. The table design for the left hand pinky keys has great leverage and rollers, allowing for a seamless transfer from Bb to C# bell keys.

Esthetically, this horn has a unique look as it is still retaining a little of the original gold lacquer towards the tone holes, but most has been worn off from use. A few past dent repairs on the bow cap are showing, and a resolder near the front F mechanism is evident around the ribbed construction.

Sonically, this saxophone plays with a rich, dark tone that projects very nicely over other saxophone models of the time. While usually dark and focused horns are not known for their amplitude, the Gold Medal Mk. I defies the trend.

This horn came in playing on decent pads, but the bell keys do not form a seal, so it could use a set-up. However, Saxquest is offering this Gold Medal Mk. I to be purchased in "as-is" condition. Inquire with mike@saxquest.com for repair questions.

This saxophone will ship with an SKB contoured case for alto saxophone, which has a pocket for saxophone accessories.
