Selmer Mark VI – 1957

This is a vintage Selmer Paris Mark VI alto saxophone in gold lacquer, serial number 70154. If you are looking for a Mark VI with a good look and a good price tag this 1957 vintage alto is going to be very appealing. This is incredible player regarding sound and response. It takes the air in quite easy and has a smooth and colorful sonic character. The quality of the sound leans a little more towards the brighter side of things but is by no means ultra bright. This would be a great horn for straight jazz and lead alto work, but it would also be great for something in a big pop band horn section. Like you would expect on any vintage Selmer the key action feels comfortable under the fingers and helps provide an ultra fluid playing experience.

The pictures tell the story of this sax the best. It has seen a ton of play time over the years but still has an endless amount of music to offer the next owner. It was re-lacquered a very long time ago. The body shows the proper honey colored air bake lacquer. The engraving can still be seen clearly around the Selmer stamp. It has shows the Mark VI stamp clearing on the upper body tube near the octave key. Physically the sax is in solid condition showing typical cosmetic wear for a sax of its vintage. The body tube, bow and bow cap are all in very good condition. There is a some wear around the cap but it was never pushed in. The original neck with matching serial number stamp is also with the sax. It is in good shape and was never pulled down.

This alto came into the shop on some old pads very much past their prime. Because of this the alto is currently awaiting a mechanical overhaul in our shop. The overhaul will include a disassemble, cleaning, precise key fitting and reassembly with all new corks, felts, Valentino pro pads and metal domed resonators. While the alto is in the shop we will also clean up the guard foot of the low Eb key guard.

The previous owner of this sax purchased it in 1965 and used it professionally until recently when they decided to retire. I spent some time playing this horn before we put it in the shop and am very excited to play it once more when the overhaul is complete. This saxophone ships out in perfect playing condition with used protec contoured case.
