The Martin Alto Sax
This is nice original lacquer Martin Committee III “The Martin” alto saxophone, serial number 155474. The Martins from the late 1940's like this one are super responsive saxophones. If you are looking to get into for a vintage pro alto without breaking the $2000 price tag you can never go wrong with an old Martin.
This one is in particularly good physical condition showcasing Martin beveled tone holes, original key pearls, key rollers, moveable thumb rest. It is not the prettiest sax in the shop at this time but it features the original lacquer. The body tube, bell and bell flare are all in great shape. Its bow and bow cap are in outstanding original condition. This saxophone shows no history of serious past repair. There is one re-solder on the one of the key feet to the low Eb key guard. The original neck with matching serial number stamp is also with this saxophone. It is in great condition and has never been pulled down.
Martin's have a core sound much closer to some of the French saxophones more so then the other American vintage makes such as Conn or Buescher. This one has a nice forward projecting sonic character with a warm center. It does lean a little towards the bright side regarding sound color and is very balanced from top to bottom. The key action feels nice and compact under the fingers which allows for fluid motion across the entire instrument. The alto came into our shop with a set of leather pads and brown plastic resonators all in very good condition. We are going to set the saxophone up in our shop with its current pads and put a very precise key regulation on it. This saxophone ships out in perfect playing condition.
