HELP, I Want One!

Very rare original lacquer Selmer Radio Improved model alto sax, serial number 19739. The last of the “Selmer Super Series” of horns, the Radio Improved was only in production for one year, making it quite rare by today's standards. Nearly all of them have been relacquered at some point, making this original lacquer example a real find.

This sax shows a moderate amount of lacquer wear, but being original, that is to be expected after nearly 90 years. Cosmetic wear aside, the sax is amazing physical condition. It shows no dents or dings, no resolders, no previous repairs of any kind. It has been played at some point in its life, but obviously never abused, and well cared for. The bell flare, bottom bow curve, bell-to-body brace, and neck are all perfect with no signs of previous repair.

This horn as repadded in the last couple years, using leather pads and metal waffle style resonators. It will get a fresh adjustment from our repair shop before shipping, where we will optimize the stacks and replace any material not up to code. It will ship in perfect adjustment, backed by our full year mechanical warranty.

The Radio Improved horns are arguably Selmer's most famous model pre-Balanced Action. Despite only having about 2000 horns produced, it remains a very sought-after instrument by today's players. This alto plays with a warm, slightly darker sound, but is more open feeling than a modern Selmer, with a core that isn't as tight or focused. Definitely more of a spread characteristic, without losing any color in its tone. Fun little player, great for players and collectors alike.
