This is an extremely rare vintage Selmer US “padless” alto sax, serial number 30036. The Selmer padless sax was manufactured by Buescher for the Selmer USA company. Most of these horns have been relacquered at some point in their lives, and while the neck on this horn has been redone, the body itself is completely original, featuring elaborate “Selmer SBA-like” floral engraving wrapping completely around the bell and down onto the bottom bow.

The padless sax was truly a unique design. In order to try to create a louder, more resonant sound, Selmer decided to create a saxophone without pads, since it was thought that leather pads absorbed some of the volume. It's hard to argue with the science, since to this day players keep trying to put larger metal resonators in their horns for a more reflective surface. But the design here was a colossal failure. Instead of pads, the seal was made over an “o-ring” that circled the tone hole. These o-rings were much harder to work on by a tech, making removing leaks more time consuming and in some cases, nearly impossible. The o-rings on this sax have been removed (or more likely, fallen out with age) and as such, the horn is not playable in its current condition. But it makes for a beautiful collector's piece.

This sax is in excellent physical condition. It shows some cosmetic scruff but only a few tiny dings, including one currently under the thumbrest as seen in the photos. This is a rare and extremely cool collectors piece. Don't miss out on a chance to grab a all original Selmer padless sax! Ships in a neat vintage contoured case.
