HELP, I Want One!

Mark VI

Great playing “5 digit” Selmer Paris Mark VI tenor sax, serial number 67745. This is a classic “American engraved” Mark VI. This was a one-owner horn until recently, the original buyer having purchased it new in 1956. He spent a lifetime gigging on it and enjoying it, and the sax is now ready for a new owner to take it to its next life.

As you can see in the photos, there's quite a bit of lacquer wear on this horn, but it is all from honest use. The previous owner played it a bunch of its 60+ years of life. However, I only see evidence of past dent work in the bottom bow area, and just one resoldered joint, on one foot of the low C keyguard. No other resolders, and no other previous repairs. The bow cap is perfect, the bell-to-body brace is nice, etc. The neck is original to the horn and has the matching serial number stamped on it. Amazingly, it still has much of the original factory blue paint around the “S” of the octave key.

This tenor was just overhauled by Aaron Kinman, using firm leather pads and metal domed resonators. It has been set up well with a medium spring tension and medium key height. The action is fluid and even up and down the horn, and is smooth as butter.

This is a forceful, powerful Mark VI. It plays with a lot of edge and projection is outstanding. As many early 5 digit horns do, it has an overall warmer sound, but I don't find it to be overly dark. It takes your air very efficiently and gives you back a wall of sound. Great tenor for rock and funk, but you can also pair with a good jazz mouthpiece if you want to mellow it down a bit.
