Here we have a Nach Meyer Hannover 11-Key Irish flute made from grenadilla. This flute is suspected to have been 19th century when it was manufactured, but it's difficult to tell any specific date on an item like this. It was recently overhauled and given a fresh set of pads.
Being over 100 years old, this flute is sporting one long crack the length of the head joint, even to the bottom half of the tuning barrel, this actually doesn’t affect how it plays, the inside of the head joint has a brass liner, so it plays just fine. There are no pins or cracks anywhere else, the posts look like they’ve never been removed
The 11-key flute features Albert-system solid-nickel chromatic keywork, 6 main toneholes, extended low range to B, chromatic alternate keys for F, Bb, and G# in the right and left hand. The highest trill key is for high D to E. The head joint features a brass-lined-interior, double-socket tuning slide that has a generous amount of room available. Normally this head joint needs to be pulled out to tune the instrument to 440hz. In all honesty the intonation is not dead on, one must use their ear if high precision is the goal.
This flute plays with a wonderful dark tone, there's a fair amount of resistance to get accustomed to if you've never played this style of flute before, but anyone wanting to venture into Irish traditional music at a low cost would enjoy this instrument. New or custom-made flutes with the same range and fingering system can be a few thousand dollars. We had Ben play a tune 'Willie Coleman's' to demonstrate playability. Each register locks in nicely, and you feel a real bond with the instrument.
We will ship this flute in perfect playing condition with a hard wood case with a red interior.
