HELP, I Want One!

This is a 1928 vintage Conn “F Mezzo” alto sax, serial number 213621. This horn has been sitting for a long time and does need a complete restoration, but we have it priced well below market value, giving you plenty of room to get the work done and still be ahead in the game.

For those unfamiliar with the F Mezzo alto (or sometimes mistakenly called the F Mezzo soprano), this was a horn made by Conn in the spirit of Adolphe Sax's original idea of a full family of saxophones, some alternating in Bb and Eb like what we have today, and others alternating in C and F. This is what gave us the C Melody tenor and the C Soprano, and this is the F Alto that fits in between. Very few of these were made back in the early 20th century, and fewer still have survived to today.

The gold plating on this sax does not appear to be original, though it was most likely done at the factory some time after production. Unfortunately, it has been sitting in a wet attic for a number of years, which has taken its toll. Though never submerged under water, the wet environment has led to tarnish and corrosion throughout. Most of the keywork does move, though it is sluggish. A few keys are completely frozen, such as the octave mechanism, and those parts/rods may need to be rebuilt. It isn't a task for the faint hearted, but if you have a repair bench and have been working on horns for awhile, this is definitely a project worth undertaking. The horn is complete with original neck, and once properly restored, it doesn't get any more rare than a gold plated F Mezzo. We are lucky to have a restored one in our museum, and they are sweet players, with a lyrical and colorful tone.
