Beautiful condition first series Yamaha Custom YAS-855 alto sax, serial number 001499. This is a great horn for the player who loves the Yamaha Custom feel and sound, but can't spring for the new price.

The Custom 855 is an entirely different horn from the other Yamaha Custom instruments that came after it. It has a different bore design, which gave the horn a stronger focus and slightly more resistance. Some players feel that modern Yamahas are almost too free blowing, and if you are in that camp, this may be the perfect horn for you. The keywork feels crisp and new under your fingers, with the same effortless feel that Yamaha has down pat. The sax ships with its original Custom M1 neck and in its original case, which is also in pristine shape.

Physically, this horn has obviously been well cared for. There is some scratching on the back side of the bell, as seen in the photos, and very minor lacquer wear on a few touch points, but overall, the original lacquer is still 99% intact. One tiny ping in the body tube, which we'll remove seamlessly during our upcoming adjustment.

Needless to say, this alto came to us in all original pads with original brown nylon resonators. For the most part, pads were still in great shape, but we wanted to make sure everything was right. The sax is currently in our repair shop in line for a fresh adjustment, where we re-seat all existing pads, and replace any that aren't up to our standards. We'll also replace all key adjustment material and adjust key heights and spring tensions throughout. The sax will ship in perfect playing shape, backed by our full year mechanical warranty.

This alto plays with a strong core, with the perfect amount of positive resistance to give you something to push against. It is warm sounding without being overly dark, and is fat and full from low Bb up into the altissimo. A solid top-shelf professional alto with looks to kill, this one will not disappoint.
