Selmer SBA

This is a super sweet 1951 vintage Selmer Paris Super Balanced Action alto sax in excellent original lacquer, serial number 47346. This alto has just been freshly restored in the Saxquest repair shop and is ready to make its new owner a very happy player.

This horn features exquisite American style engraving, the full floral pattern wrapping around the bell and extending down onto the bottom bow. The original lacquer looks amazing. There's some scratching on the bell just over the Selmer logo, probably from a past sax stand, but other than, only light lacquer wear on the usual touch points. There's also a small ring of lacquer loss on the neck behind the cork, from a previous longer cork that had been installed. I rate the lacquer on this alto in the solid 94-95% range. The sax shows no history of dents or previous dent repair, and the original neck (with matching serial number) has never been pulled down. The only previous repair is the side (alternate) F# keyguard was missing when we received the sax, and it has been replaced with a new part. The resolder work on this repair is as clean as you will find.

The repadding on this alto was done in our shop by Josh Creekmore, using premium firm leather Valentino Pro series pads and oversized, slightly domed seamless metal resonators. The resos used are similar in appearance to what would have originally been on this alto. The action is crisp and clean under your fingers, with key heights set at medium-open and the spring tension slightly lighter than what you'd typically find on a Mark VI.

This SBA plays with a clean, precise attack, and is overall a warmer, darker sounding instrument. Very free blowing but without sacrificing focus or depth of tone. It is a tremendous horn for players who love the vintage Selmer Paris sound : warm and inviting, but with enough edge that you can push it hard too when needed.
