This is a phenomenal “player's” 1967 vintage Selmer Paris Mark VI alto sax, serial number 150614. This alto is in original lacquer and just months removed from the fabled “Sanborn vintage” of altos. If you've been eyeing one of those before but can't afford their higher price tags, this is the next best thing. This alto will ship with a fresh pro overhaul from the Saxquest repair shop and be ready to go for a long time to come.
As you can see in the photos, this also shows a moderate amount of lacquer wear from honest use. In this business we just call that character. It has a couple resolders in the bottom bow keyguard feet but all has been done very well. Some very minor past dent work but definitely no major trauma. The horn has been used but not abused. The neck is original to the horn, and it currently has an ever-so-slight pulldown, but we'll correct that in our shop during the work we do.
The previous owner was using this alto as an everyday horn and kept it maintained, changing pads as needed. Having said that, it has never received a full, professional overhaul, so we're going to do it right. We'll take it apart, clean it inside and out, and replace all pads and material. We'll also replace all springs, and then optimize the action for response and intonation. It will feel like a new horn again once we're done.
This alto plays just as you want from a mid-60s era Mark VI. Big, bold sound, with a lightning-fast response and huge carrying ability. It has all the edge you need to be heard and definitely gives off “lead alto” vibes. With all the power it has, you can also pull it back and play ballads with ease and control. Great sax, and I expect it to be even better once our work is complete.
