It's rare indeed when we come across an original lacquer Cigar Cutter, nearly all of them have been relacquered at some point. But this is a true original lacquer Selmer Cigar Cutter series alto sax from 1931, serial number 14705. It has been freshly restored in our repair shop by tech Ben Reece, and ships in perfect adjustment.
Part of the Selmer Super series, the Cigar Cutter is called as such because of the design of the octave key assembly, which resembles an old timey cigar cutter opening. Remarkably, this alto still shows decent original lacquer coverage on the body tube. There is more wear on the keys and bell (inside and outside), but it is a lot better looking than most Selmer Paris horns from this era. Amazingly, I see just one tiny repair, a bit of minor past dent work in the bottom bow area. There are no other dents and absolutely no resolders. The original neck has never been pulled down or damaged.
This alto was just repadded by Ben Reece in the Saxquest repair shop, using premium firm leather pads and brown nylon resonators. It has been set up ideally as a Selmer from this vintage should, with medium-light action and fairly open key heights. It feels like a brand new horn under your fingers, and playing it is like stepping back in time. It has a free and open response, while retaining a definite warmer core. It's been well cared for over its life, and is ready for a new owner to enjoy!
