This is a post-World War II vintage (1949) Martin Committee III alto sax, serial number 171913. Often called a “The Martin Alto” for the engraving on the bell, this is arguably the best alto Martin ever made, and was certainly their biggest seller.

This alto was relacquered long ago, but wasn't overly buffed. The factory engraving on the bell is still clearly visible and in good detail. There is some lacquer rippling in the bottom bow, evidence of past dent work, and some resolders on the low Eb keyguard, which is not original to the horn. The only other thing of note is the thumbrest, where the original was removed and replaced with a more modern swivel style thumbrest, as seen in the photos. The neck is original to the horn (though with a non-original screw), and has the matching serial number.

Pads are currently old and well past end-of-life, and the sax will need a repad to be playable. Our repair shop is currently backed up for months, so we've made the decision to sell this alto as-is at a super low price. Take it to your local tech for a repad, or better yet, repad it yourself, and you'll be into a great old USA made alto at a bargain. Ships in its original case.
