This is a great opportunity to pick up a 1964 vintage Selmer Mark VI tenor at a lower price! This sax, serial number 117564, is priced to move and is in excellent physical condition.
This tenor looks tremendous. It was relacquered long ago, and still shows an amber color lacquer indicative of the time it was first produced. The “newer” lacquer shows typical wear for a sax of this age, but it has obviously never been abused. The sax shows no signs of previous dent work or repair. I can't even spot a resolder on it. The neck has the matching serial number and has never been pulled down. Oddly enough, I think the neck was not relacquered and still appears to be in original lacquer, though the octave key has been replaced or re-plated, as seen in the photos.
This sax comes with newer pads, fitted with brown plastic resonators. The pads are soft and have plenty of life left in them. We just completed a fresh set up on the sax, cleaning it inside and out and replacing a couple aging pads, as well as all of the material, using the best synthetic material for a great feel and longevity. We also adjusted out the spring tensions and key heights, for optimal feel and response.
This is a lively horn. I find it to be on the darker side color-wise, but that warmth and color takes nothing away from the power it can produce. Even when moving a lot of air through the horn, its sound stays fat and warm. At lower volume, it is a sultry and sweet player, and responds on a whisper. This is a player's horn for sure, one that you can take to any gig.
