Recently the Apollo Theater hosted an opera about the saxophonist Charlie Parker. Commissioned by Opera Philadelphia, Charlie Parker's Yardbird features Lawrence Brownlee as Charlie Parker. Scat singing, quoting Parker's licks, and incorporating Now's the Time the opera is an infusion of classical opera and jazz styles. It features Parker's relationships with his mother, four wives and Dizzy Gillespie.
