June 2014 Sax Trivia Contest

Prizes:

  • Saxquest Gift Card ($ 50.00 value)

Winner

Rebecca Owens from Spirit Lake, IA US

Contest background

This famous tenor man was most well known as an early pioneer of the R&B tenor saxophone. His iconic solo on a Decca recording with Lionel Hampton in 1942 launched him to stardom. He continued to develop his style of playing throughout the 1940's. His bluesy style was a big show case for the wild honky low end of the tenor as well as its extreme upper register. Another distinct characteristic of this is his non-traditional doubling on bassoon.

Contest Question

Who is the tenor player and what jazz standard did he record on bassoon?

Correct Answer

Illinois Jacquet, Round Midnight
