This is a stunning original lacquer Selmer Paris Mark VI alto saxophone, serial number 144650. Words like near mint condition are not lightly thrown around but this alto is definitely deserving of some praise. It is easily one of the cleanest looking Mark VI's we have had in some time. The body is in perfect physical condition with no history of repair and zero re-solders. Its body tube, bow, bow cap and bell flare are all in stunning original condition. The neck is also original and in stellar condition. It has never been pulled down. The alto does show some light cosmetic play but quite frankly we have seen new Jubilee saxs less then a year old with more wear.
The 144 serial number on this sax puts it right in the sweet spot as a preferred vintage Mark VI alto. At 140 thousand these altos are often referred to The Sanborn Series. This alto is one very sweet player. It is remarkably free blowing and has a nice balanced control from top to bottom. The control allows for a lot of sonic flexibility as well as control over pitch. It has a warm center to its core sound but definitely has a tinge of brilliance as well. In contrast to the earlier five digit Mark VI's it is most certainly brighter. The key action under the fingers is quite comfortable and even still has a crisp feel along the key pearls.
