This is an outstanding vintage Selmer Paris Balanced Action alto sax, serial number 26164. These old balanced actions have exceptional quick response to air flow and are extremely colorful players. Their key action is also nice and compact allowing for fluid motion across all of the keys. This one came to us on some older pads with the original flat metal screw back resonators. We are currently in the process of re-padding this saxophone with a new set of Valentino Pro pads. The original screw back resonators will also be used. Saxquest professional level re-pad and set-up will also include all new corks, felts and a precise key regulation. The alto will soon be in perfect playing condition.
As a player this Balanced Action is extremely free blowing and has a world class sonic character. In comparison to the later vintage Selmers the core spread of its sound is a little bit larger on this alto. It should be considered a warm player with ultra clear projection. The current analysis of how this sax plays was also done on its older pads so it is very excited to think about how it will play once the Saxquest overhaul has been completed.
This particular alto is in very solid condition showing history of an active carrier in performance. It might be one of the cleanest factory re-lacquer jobs we have seen in some time. The current lacquer is a nice dark color appropriate for its vintage. What is especially exciting about this alto is how crisp all of the engraving is. Most notable the center piece on the bell, incredibly clear! There has been a small amount of re-solders to the key guard feet of the bell key guards. The bell to body brace has also previously been re-soldered. Its body tube, bow, bell, bell flare and bow cap are all in very nice original condition.
If you are looking for that classic jazz sound you can not go wrong with a colorful player like this one!
