This is a sweet playing vintage Selmer Paris Super Balanced Action tenor sax, serial number 54555. These late vintage SBA's tend to exhibit a wider free blowing core sound then some of the earlier more focused SBA's. This sax in particular is certainly not an exception to that tendency. Its sonic character is very akin to the first series of Mark VI's which played very fat and loud while maintaining a beautiful dark sound. This sax showcases a huge full resonating free blowing sound. It is warm and extremely full. Volume and projection on this instrument is exceptional. If you are looking for a good SBA with a little more meat at the heart of its core you will not want to miss this one.
The previous owner of this sax put a nice amount of play time on and justifiably so as it is a killer player. It has been professionally maintained over the years and came to us with a nice set of leather pads and flat metal resonators. We are going to go through the sax top to bottom in our shop and make sure it ships out in perfect playing condition. The physical shape of the body is excellent. There have been a few small re-solders to key guard feet on the lower part of the horn but it has never seen any major solder or body work. The bell, bow and bow cap are all in good shape as well. This saxophone does include the original neck. Its neck is in outstanding condition and has never been pulled down.
At some point someone did take the lacquer off of this saxophone as it is now showcases a raw brass finish. The unlacquered body allows the horn to breath and resonate extremely freely. This is most likely a big contributing factor to why the horn has such an impressive sound.
