This is a beautiful, early vintage Selmer Mark VI tenor sax, serial number 60965. The serial number dates this tenor back to 1955, the very early dates of the Mark VI model. Despite being 60 years old, this tenor is in incredible shape, and it was recently fully restored in the Saxquest shop.
This Mark VI is very straight. It was relacquered a very long time ago, perhaps even at the Selmer factory, as it is the original type and color of lacquer. And the relacquering was done done extremely well with no major buffing, nearly all of the engraving remains crisp. In fact most players will think this horn is original, it looks that great. This is probably the best factory jobs we've ever seen here at Saxquest.
Physically the sax is in fantastic shape too. No dents or dings, no old resolders that I can see. The sax shows no history of dent work or previous repairs. The original neck has the matching serial number, and the neck has never been pulled down or damaged.
This tenor was restored in the Saxquest shop recently, where we replaced all the pads. It has a set of premium firm leather pads with oversized flat metal TM Custom resonators. We set the instrument up with medium-open key heights, and a medium spring tension. It feels like a new horn straight from the factory.
As good as it looks, this Mark VI plays even better. It has a lightning fast response to every hint of air, and a huge bottom end that stays fat as you climb the sax into the altissimo. Sonically it plays a hair on the darker side, but I wouldn't call it an overly dark instrument. The warmth adds color and depth without feeling stuffy or tight. An extremely big sounding tenor, everything you want in a vintage VI.
