This is a mid-50's vintage Buescher 400 “Top Hat & Cane” tenor sax, serial number 354092. This tenor looks great in silver plating and is a real fun horn to play! This is arguably the best model ever put forth by Buescher, and it is easy to see why.
This tenor was most likely originally lacquer, and was later silver plated. The work was done extremely well, as the fine detail in the castle scene in the engraving is still crisp, evidence of no major buffing. The horn really is in fantastic shape, showing no evidence of past dent work or repairs. The bottom bow is perfect as is the bell flare. The original neck has never been pulled down and has the underslung octave key.
The Buescher 400 was recently fully repadded, using good firm leather pads. All of the original snap-in metal domed resonators have been retained, though the springs have been replaced at some point. The sax is currently in our repair shop where we will give it our full pro set up. We will adjust the spring tensions and key heights so everything is optimal, and replace the key adjustment corks and felts with better synthetic material. The sax will ship backed up by our full year mechanical warranty.
A good Top Hat & Cane is a force to be reckoned with, and this tenor fits the bill. It is a powerful horn, with plenty of projection and punch. The silver plating adds some warmth and color to the tone, so you never feel like the sax is getting too bright or piercing. Just a wall of sound that doesn't falter. A great sax for jazz or rock. Ships in its original case.
