Product ID: 101016MartinAlto
This is a 1930 vintage Martin Handcraft “Typewriter” model alto sax in original silver plate, serial number 101016. This model was only available for a couple years, making it one of the more rare saxophones out there, and it features a unique design not seen anywhere else, making it very collectible too.
The Typewriter was nicknamed as such because of the look of the sax. This horn features pearl buttons on every single key throughout, including the side, palm, and table keys. It was a different idea for sure, and it makes for an interesting looking sax, but in everyday use the pearls make it a little cumbersome to get around on, for instance there are no rollers in the pinky keys.
Physically this sax looks great. The original silver plating is solid, with no real finish wear to speak of. The sax shows no major dents or previous damages. The neck is original with matching serial number, but it will need a little work, as the octave key guide has been pushed in to the neck and that dent will need to be taken out. Generally, the sax just needs a good cleaning and a repad. All of the keywork is intact, but some is sluggish so it will need oiling. Silver polish will make this alto shine up like new.
This is a great piece of saxophone history and a staple in every serious collector's hoard.
