This is a very rare, very special find. This is a vintage Kohlert-made stencil stamped “Pennsylvania Special” alto sax, serial number 267475. This horn features Keilwerth's famous rolled tone holes, but also has cool top-of-the-line features such as pearl inlay on nearly all of its touch points.
This alto is in great shape. The matte silver plating shows very minimal finish wear and the sax looks beautiful. As you can see in the photos, it has just been shined up in our shop and looks incredible. Physically the horn is very straight, couple minor pencil-point pings in the bottom area but no major previous dents or repairs. There are no resolders anywhere, and the original neck is solid. The neck does have a Conn-like underslung octave key.
This horn was just overhauled and repadded in our shop by Josh Creekmore. It has all new pads, corks, and felts throughout, and is in perfect playing condition. We optimized the keys heights and spring tensions, for a totally effortless, smooth feel.
This is a real one-of-a-kind collector's horn, but it is also a very fine player. It has a big beefy sound, but the silver plating definitely warms its tone and adds another level of richness. It has a cool complex sound, you can do a lot with this horn in a variety of settings.
