This is a great later vintage C.G Conn New Wonder “Chu Berry” series alto sax, serial number 238179. This alto is in very good shape and features a recent pro overhaul by renowned expert Les Arbuckle.
This alto is in good original gold plating, showing minor finish wear you'd expect from a sax that is over 70 years old! More positively, it shows no major past dents or repairs. The bottom bow has had a couple minor chair dings in the past but no serious trauma. The neck is original and it too is in fantastic shape. This horn shows all the hallmarks of a great Conn of this vintage, including trill G#, rolled tone holes, fingernail file table G#, beautiful floral hand engraving, and a microtuner neck.
This alto was just repadded by Arbuckle using premium firm leather pads and brown plastic resonators. It has been set up ideally with spring tensions a hair on the lighter side, with medium key heights, and feels like butter under your fingers. Sonically, it plays with a bit of spread rather than focus, and the gold plating (with silver underneath) really warms up its tone. It has a clear, slightly darker sound. Comes in its original case.
