This is a beautiful Selmer Kookaburro Reference 54 alto, limited edition, serial number 701683. The Limited Kookaburro was manufactured in a very limited amount, only 90 were ever made. They feature a dark honey lacquer with elaborate engraving across the bell, high f# and engraving around the neck. This one in particular is in fabulous condition. It has been professionally played and maintained by the previous owner. There is some modest play wear on the sax around the main touch points but nothing serious. The body is in pristine original condition and has no repair history. Its original neck is with the alto and is in perfect condition.
The Reference Series was originally released by Selmer as a tribute to the Selmer Mark VI which was first released in 1954. They did a great job of capturing the key designed and the ultra resonant free blowing sonic character. This sax plays with an exceptionally balanced response from top to bottom. Its balance and superb control make it an absolute ease to play. It also makes the scale super consistent. The sound color on the Reference is rather warm and is closer to the darker side. The outstanding key ergonomics on the sax is just as impressive as its sound. Its front F key has a great feel and allows for an exceptionally easy transition.
The Reference alto is currently in the Saxquest shop being adjusted. It ships in perfect playing condition with the original Reference contoured case. The alto is currently on premium leather pads with seamless metal resonators. These pads are all in excellent condition. This is hands down one of the most impressive players in the shop right now. Don't miss out on one of the leading professional altos saxophones available on the vintage and used market.
