Repairman's Special, Cleaned & Prepped for Overhaul

This is a 1924 vintage C.G. Conn New Wonder series C-Melody saxophone, serial number 140049. This sax has been cleaned and prepped for an overhaul, and is ready for the home repairman to finish the job.

The C Melody sax was once extremely popular. Between an alto an tenor in size, and in the key of C, a player could read right off the piano book without having to transpose. It fell out of favor by the 1930's and you don't see them much anymore, but it is a cool piece of American history. This example is currently in bare brass, though whether it was originally so, or later had its silver finish removed, is hard to say. I would guess that it was an original factory unlacquered instrument, and has only been buffed to clean.

The body of the sax is in great shape. There are a couple tiny dings which are easily removed, but no serious past dents or trauma. The original neck has never been pulled down. The neck has a small split in the end, where the cork would cover, which should be repaired. The original microtuner mechanism is a little sluggish but still moves freely. The sax mostly just needs a repad. A couple springs will need to be replaced, but most are still present and in great shape.

If you have a bench at home and know, or want to learn, how to repad a sax, this is a fantastic, cheaper option, where most of the “heavy lifting” has all ready been done. Ships in its original case, intact though with a broken handle.
