This is a very pretty, original lacquer Selmer Paris Super Balanced Action alto sax, serial number 44924. This alto looks quite nice and is a fine player too, with a dark, colorful tone and easy, free response.
The original lacquer on this alto stands in the 80% range or so, with mild lacquer wear throughout as seen in the photos. The serial number dates this sax to 1950, and it looks a lot better than you'd expect for 65+ years old! There is some history of minor dings removed in the bottom bow, and one past resoldered joint on one foot of the low Eb keyguard, all very minor work. This is an American engraved SBA with beautiful floral engraving around the bell, and the original neck has the matching serial number stamped in it.
This horn was repadded a couple years ago, using quality firm leather pads and brown plastic resonators. We are going to go through the sax top to bottom and give it our full pro set up before it ships. We'll open up all the key heights to get a bigger sound, re-set all the spring tensions, and replace any pads that are starting to age. It will be a pretty thorough job to really get the most out of this alto, and ship it in perfect regulation and backed with our full year mechanical warranty.
A good SBA is a great option for those players that like the Mark VI, but want something a little less focused. This horn is very free blowing and resonant and is slightly more spread than what you'll usually find on a “newer” Selmer. It takes your air well with very little resistance, and its tone is as clear as you'll find. A very fun alto to play.
