Saxquest 'The Hoss' Tenor Sax Mouthpiece

This is the Saxquest Hoss mouthpiece for tenor saxophone. The Hoss was designed in the spirit of the 50's vintage slant duck bill by Berg Larsen. 

 

The construction of the Hoss showcases straight side walls and a wide open medium/large inner throat. Leading away from the inner throat there is a classic “Bullet Chamber” configuration which shapes its way into the steady angle of the mouthpiece’s floor and baffle area. The combination of the chamber and floor shape allows air to move through the piece with a lot of speed and efficiency. It can play with a sensitive warm character or can easily achieve all the awesome nastiness you need. Due to its flexibility this mouthpiece works great for solo players in a big band as well as work in rock and R&B groups.  

 

The Hoss was  manufactured in collaboration with mouthpiece maker Eric Falcon. It is made from ultra-premium solid German bar stock hard rubber. It is turned on a CNC controlled high precision lathe and then milled on an absolute state of the art 5-axis vertical mill. Shaping of the throat, baffle & tip rail; profiling of the chamber; under-cutting of the side walls, and cutting of the window is all accomplished using three strokes per pass. This results in fabulously tight tolerances which leads to incredible consistency from piece to piece. All of the Hoss tenor mouthpieces are hand finished by Eric Falcon.

The Hoss is modeled after a 50's vintage hard rubber "Slant" Duck Bill. These pieces pre-date the current Berg facing system. But to give the user an idea we would classify these pieces as being most similar to a 0 or a 1 baffle height. Notes on ligatures: 

 

In order to keep the price on all of our mouthpieces at a lower premium we sell them with out a ligature and cap set. 

 

Because these pieces are based on an older Berg they are going to need slightly slimmer ligatures then a standard current production hard rubber tenor mouthpiece. Most standard to large size alto ligatures will work. Recommended ligatures by the play testing team at Saxquest are listed below.
