News from Saxquest

If you have saxophone- or music-related news of interest to our members, please email us.
Busy January!
1/13/2012 - This is going to be a busy month at Saxquest! Hopefully we saw some of you at the recent JEN show in Louisville last weekend. Mark will roaming the aisles at NAMM in a couple weeks, and then we have a large display at the MMEA show at the end of the month. If you are in the midwest and you'll be at MMEA, stop by and play some horns!

This week we played catch-up and added a ton of "new" vintage mouthpieces and saxes to our website, including a couple very nice Mark VI tenors. Give us a call if you see anything you are interested in. And keep updated on the new happenings at Saxquest (announcements coming soon!) here and on our facebook page.

Greg Osby at Saxquest This Saturday December 17
12/15/2011 - One more great jazz workshop at Saxquest to close out the year!! I'm excited to invite you out to check out Greg Osby this Saturday (Dec 17) at 2PM. As always, the setting will be informal and refreshments will be served.

Not too many musicians can say that they've recorded 15 records for Blue Note as a leader. Greg Osby counts himself as one of those musicians. Having been an established player with such notable artists as varied as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Jackie DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Jim Hall and Jaki Byard, Osby's music is a living testament to what great music is all about!

While born right here in St. Louis, Greg has made New York his adopted home since the early 1980's. Don't miss this great opportunity to meet and hear a St. Louis native at the top of his game! Greg truly is one of the great jazz players of our time!

I've attached a flier with all of the details. Its free and open to the public. Please pass along the flier to all those you feel may be interested.

A special THANKS to P. Mauriat Saxophones for sponsoring this event and I hope to see you out on Saturday at the Saxquest Shop. Remember, our enthusiasm to continue hosting these kinds of events depends on how many people we get coming to check them out. Thanks for your support!!!

Saxquest Voted Best Museum in St Louis!
11/15/2011 - We are thrilled to have just been awarded best museum in St Louis by the local Riverfront Times! This is our second "Best of" RFT award, we last won best musical instrumental store in 2008. Here's the link : http://www.riverfronttimes.com/bestof/2011/award/best-museum-1463498/

Bob Reynods @ Saxquest THIS SATURDAY! FREE!
11/9/2011 - Here we go again!!! Another great event this weekend at Saxquest! We're delighted to be hosting Bob Reynolds. Bob is John Mayer's saxophone player and an absolute world-class musician! He will be giving a masterclass at the Saxquest shop this Saturday, November 12 starting at 2PM. The setting will be informal and refreshments will be served.

Known to many as John Mayer's saxophone player, Bob Reynolds is a prolific composer, busy sideman, and critically acclaimed recording artist. His 2006 album "Can't Wait for Perfect" was voted Best Debut in the Village Voice's jazz poll and called "some of the freshest, most compelling, and most soulful music I have ever heard" by jazz luminary Joshua Redman.

A graduate of Boston's Prestigious Berkley College of Music, Reynolds has received 4 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards, played in the house band for NBC's Bonnie Hunt Show, and appeared in a wide range of situations, spanning multiple genres, as a sideman and featured soloist. Michael Buble, Nellie McKay, Guy Sebastian, Richard Bona, Tom Harrell and Brian Blade are just a few of the talents he's shared the stage and studio with. After a decade in New York, he currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.

He's well know for his dedication to jazz education and has created a great course of study used by many of aspiring jazz artists all over the country.

I've attached a flier with all of the details. Feel free to print and distribute to students or anyone else who may be interested.

We're grateful to P. Mauriat Saxophones for making this event possible. Be sure to check out more about Bob on his web site at http://bobreynoldsmusic.com.

JEFF COFFIN'S MU'TET AT SAXQUEST JULY 18
7/12/2011 - It's with tremendous enthusiasm that I invite you out to another wonderful event at Saxquest. Next week on Monday evening (July 18) from 5-7PM we'll be hosting a concert with 3x Grammy Award winner JEFF COFFIN and his Mu'tet.

The Mu'tet is a quintet and takes its name from the word mutation, giving way to Coffin's belief that music is constantly changing and mutating. In addition to the Mu'tet, Jeff has been a member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones since 1997 and has been with the Dave Matthews Band since 2008.

Peter Ponzol at Saxquest THIS Weekend
4/26/2011 - I'm very excited to present to you a very rare and unique opportunity this weekend at Saxquest. We're bringing in saxophone guru Peter Ponzol to the Saxquest shop this Saturday from 2PM-4PM. The setting will be informal and refreshments will be served.

Peter Ponzol is an internationally renowned jazz musician. His styles cover a broad spectrum of jazz and improvisational music from hard bop to post modern impressionism. As a player, Peter has performed in most countries around the world, and has received not only a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Performance grant, but was also invited to Germany by the prestigious German Academic Exchange Service. He has given clinics and workshops worldwide and has taught in several universities.

In addition to his playing prowess, Peter is well known for his contributions in both the design and manufacturing of very successful high-end saxophone products. Peter's experience and talents were also utilized as a consultant and designer by some of the world's oldest and most respected saxophone companies in Germany and France.

Don't let this clinic pass you by. This is truly a unique opportunity! Peter has amassed a great wealth of knowledge over the years and will prove to be both entertaining and informative.

Free Concert Artist Series Performance February 5
2/2/2011 - Saxquest has been busy the last few weeks. Hopefully we saw some of you at either the JEN show in New Orleans a couple weeks ago, or at MMEA in Tan-Tar-A last week. We have one more show on the schedule this season, TMEA down in Texas next week. If you are attending, stop by and say hi!

I'm very excited to invite you out to a great event this weekend at the Saxquest shop. We're bringing in the Willie Aikens quartet as part of their "Alima" reunion tour. Every member of this group is a master musician in their own right.

They'll be giving a riveting performance at the Saxquest shop this Saturday starting at 11AM. The setting will be informal and refreshments will be served.

Willie Aikens is a St. Louis jazz icon. At the young age of 18 Willie moved to New York in 1957 and stayed for eleven years. He was right there on the front lines during one of the most innovative eras in jazz history, influencing and being influenced by all of the great players of that time. He returned to St. Louis in 1968 while Gas Light Square was still in full swing. Our city has been so blessed to have him remain here as an active musician since that time.

This performance will be a rare opportunity to hear Willie live with all of the members of his debut recording album "Alima". Whether you've never heard Willie Aikens or whether you're a long time Willie Aikens fan, don't miss out on this unique opportunity. This quartet plays at an incredibly high level with wonderful energy and creativity.

This is a very rare opportunity to chat with and learn directly from one of today’s leading voices on saxophone.

James Carter has cemented his reputation as one of the most adventurous, visionary young reed players on the cusp of this new millennium. Carter’s passion for the roots of his music and the tools of his trade run deep, and he speaks with infectious enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge both about the tribal elders and the history of his instruments. Not as an outsider, but as one of the most exciting young virtuosos in contemporary music; as an accomplished wind player who has taken on the challenge of mastering all the single reed and double reed instruments; as an eternal searcher... --Chip Stern, Jazz Times

Saxquest Grand Opening - JUNE 14
6/3/2008 -

SAXQUEST GRAND OPENING
June 14 – Noon to 6:30PM

Saxquest is happy to announce the Grand Opening of its new store front location and the Grand Opening of the Saxquest Saxophone Museum. The museum showcases a huge collection of many of the finest and rarest saxophones in the world as well as a collection of vintage saxophone accessories and other historic saxophone memorabilia. The museum is located on the 2nd floor of the Saxquest shop and is free and open to the public.

Included in the museum’s collection is a fully restored quartet of original pre-civil war Adolphe Sax saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone). Adolphe Sax invented the saxophone in 1846 and very few of his original instruments still exist. Also featured is a Conn-O-Sax, made by the C.G. Conn company in 1928. This wonderful and fascinating instrument was the brainchild of their ill-conceived idea of replacing the orchestra’s English horn with a saxophone. Other highlights from the collection include a quintet of 1920’s vintage gold plate artist model Conn saxophones (alto, c-melody, tenor, bari, bass) with exquisite hand cut engraving, a 1950’s vintage arcrylic Grafton saxophone (made famous by Charlie Parker at Massey Hall in New York), a Selmer Paris saxophone commemorating their 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair gold medal for clarinet design, and many other rare and one-of-a-kind saxes. From the huge bass saxophone to the obscenely small sopranisimo saxophone, the Saxquest Saxophone Museum is a real St. Louis treasure for the music lover or the eclectic museum goer.

Saxquest has established itself as one of the most trusted saxophone specialty shops in the United States and the only one in the St. Louis metro area. Saxquest carries one of the largest inventories of vintage saxophones in the country as well as a full line of saxophone and clarinet accessories offered at the lowest prices anywhere. The Saxquest repair shop has garnered national attention. Two full time master-craftsmen and one apprentice perform complete mechanical restorations on woodwind and brass instruments and cater to musicians demanding top-professional level work. As such, Saxquest takes in work from some of the most discriminating professional players all over the country in addition to doing many local repairs.

Grand Opening Day Events

The Saxquest Grand Opening Day will include numerous activities marking this unique event including performances, recitals, clinics and master-classes by top level professionals, all free and open to the public. Saxquest is a strong advocate of the local St. Louis music scene and believes whole-heartedly in supporting music education for adults and our city’s youth. Food and drink will be served and door prizes awarded. 4PM-5PM - Kim Bock jazz performance and clinic - Kim Bock is one of the truly great young jazz musicians on the New York scene today. His playing draws on a multitude of influences including Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane and exudes a deep musical sensibility and instrumental expertise. Born in Denmark, Kim got one of his first big breaks when he was picked up by Maynard Ferguson in 2000, touring extensively with his Big Bop Nouveau Band. He has since gone on to record with his own quartet and most recently an organ trio (SteepleChase label).

“Kim Bock is a player that fits into the category of world-famous jazz artists that have passed through my band, to name a few; Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Peter Erskine and Slide Hampton. As my featured tenor saxophone player, Kim displays, night after night, outstanding musicianship with exceptional skills on the saxophone and a deep knowledge of the jazz idiom that makes a truly great jazz artist”Maynard Ferguson

“Mr. Bock is an exceptional player who has matched the physical challenges of his instrument, as illustrated by impressive technique and an appealing tone, both of which he has achieved through genuine talent and serious wood shedding. He's done lots of listening, and his playing on tenor has reminded me of John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter” - Phillip Booth (contributor to DownBeat & Jazziz)

5PM-6:30PM - OPEN JAM SESSION - Hang out and play with Kim Bock and others...........
