Background:

The establishment of what is now considered standard practice and repertoire for the saxophone quartet was pioneered in the early twentieth century. One of the early innovators of the saxophone had spent time in the 1920’s playing informally with three other saxophonists in a quartet setting. In December of 1928 this group made its debut as the first official saxophone quartet. At the time of the premier there was no official existing repertoire for such a group. The quartet at first mostly played transcriptions of previous existing arrangements. In 1930 a medical doctor and composer arranged some of his original compositions for the group in a collection entitled Au Jardin Des Betes Sauvages. Soon after the quartet was playing a large body of original works, in addition to their traditional repertoire of transcriptions. The quartet was active for a period of 40 years, during which time it went through musical changes as well as changes to its personnel. During the life span of the quartet they made many foundational contributions to the future development of saxophone quartets as well as the saxophone itself.
